50,000 runners get ready to Start |
This was my 6th Great North Run and as always I had a fantastic time. The run is much more than a half Marathon as it is two day party starting on the Saturday with lots of events on the Newcastle Upon Tyne Quayside, including the worlds biggest pasta party for all participating Runners.
The route takes you from the centre of Newcastle to the mouth of the Tyne at South Shields.

Runners on Tyne Bridge with The Red Arrows Passing |
Nearly all the participants run for a charity and this year was no exception, as more than £10,000,000 was collected for 350 Charities. That many runners take part in fancy costumes adds to the party atmosphere. I have in the past had the dubious pleasure of being passed by chained convicts, a singing Elvis and an army unit carrying a life boat between them, however the greatest humiliation was probably the team of two dressed as a donkey.

The Bunnies ready to go |
You are supported all the 13.1 miles by thousands of spectators and live bands along the route. At the finish line in South Shields, more than 30,000 people encourage you to make it to the finish line at the final stretch along the coastline.
This year I finished in just under two hours and a respectable 11234th position! and raised more £165 for my charity COCO.
At the finish you receive a goody bag with a medal, T-shirt and various drinks, health bars and chocolate.
All of the charities have a base at the finish, in what is called Charity Village, where you can get a well deserved Massage, hot drinks and generally cared for with Love.
I can't recommend the Great North Run hughly enough as a great Half Marathon with a real party atmosphere. It is a happy experience that will stay with you for a very long time.
Please make it a long weekend if you are one of the lucky people who ensure a place in next years event so you can enjoy all the activities on Saturday as well and all that Newcastle Upon Tyne has to offer. The 50,000 entries are normally taken within 24 hours of the release dates.
